Gordon was a faithful disciple of God. On February 3, 1961, he and family transferred their membership from their home church in St. Louis and was received as Communicant members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor. He became an Elder of the church in December of 1972. He took pride and was very honored to serve in this capacity. He was a man of service who demonstrated great wisdom, care and love in all areas of his life. Gordon was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He was initiated in 1945 at the Alpha Eta Chapter at Stowe University. After moving to Ann Arbor, he continued his life long service through the Theta Zeta Lambda Chapter of Ann Arbor, MI. Gordon was a charter member of the Gamma Rho Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity also known as The Boulé. Initiated in January 1987, Gordon and other brothers established a foundation of cultivating and celebrating excellence in Ann Arbor. Gordon was also affiliated with the Washtenaw County Court Association, Washtenaw County Sheriff Association, a founding member of the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington DC, the Ann Arbor Noon Optimist, Special Olympics, Veterans of Foreign War, and Disabled American Veterans. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Gordon was honored for service by the State of Michigan, Portage Trail Council Boy Scouts of America and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for Outstanding Devotion and Exemplary Service.
